I am convinced that one of our grave defects today, is a most serious diminishing of the good old custom of private reading of the Bible. Between the growth of Christian periodicals and books, I have a strong impression that Bibles are not read as much and as carefully as they were two hundred years ago.

I am well aware that there are more Bibles in Great Britain at this moment, than there ever were since the world began! There is more Bible-buying and Bible-selling, more Bible-printing and Bible-distributing, than there ever was! But all this time, I fear we are in danger of forgetting–that to have the Bible is one thing–and to read it privately ourselves quite another! Continue Reading »

Mighty Is Our God - By Eugene Greco, Gerrit Gustafson, & Don Moen (1989) - All the Best Songs of Praise & Worship

Mighty is our God, mighty is our King; mighty is our Lord, Ruler of ev’rything.  Glory to our God, glory to our King; glory to our Lord, Ruler of ev’rything.

His name is higher, higher than any other name; His pow’r is greater, for He has created ev’rything.

Let All the World in Every Corner Sing - By George Herbert (1633) - Trinity Hymnal

1: Let all the world in every corner sing; my God and King!  The heav’ns are not too high, His praise may upward fly; the earth is not too low, His praises there may grow.  Let all the world in every corner sing:  my God and King!

2: Let all the world in every corner sing; my God and King!  The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out; but, more than all, the heart must bear the longest part.  Let all the world in every corner sing:  my God and King!

Q. 40. Why was it requisite that the mediator should be God and man in one person?
A. It was requisite that the mediator, who was to reconcile God and man, should himself be both God and man, and this in one person, that the proper works of each nature might be accepted of God for us, and relied on by us, as the works of the whole person.

Where the Spirity of the Lord Is - By Stephen R. Adams (1973) - All the Best Songs of Praise & Worship

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is peace; Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is love.  There is comfort in life’s darkest hour.  There is light and life there is help and power in the Spirit, in the Spirit of the Lord.

The We Adore, Eternal Lord! - From the Moravian Collection (1724) - Trinity Hymnal

1: Thee we adore, eternal Lord!  We praise Thy name with one accord.  Thy saints, who here Thy goodness see, through all the world do worship Thee, through all the world do worship Thee.

2: To Thee aloud all angels cry, the heav’ns and all the pow’rs on high: Thee, holy, holy, holy King, Lord God of Hosts, they ever sing, Lord God of Hosts, they ever sing.

3: Apostles join the glorious throng, and prophets swell th’immotal song; Thy martyrs’ noble army raise eternal anthems to Thy praise, eternal anthems to Thy praise.

4: From day to day, O Lord, do we exalt and highly honor Thee!  Thy name we worship and adore, world without end, forever more, world without end, forevermore.

Q. 39. Why was it requisite that the mediator should be man?
A. It was requisite that the mediator should be man, that he might advance our nature, perform obedience to the law, suffer and make intercession for us in our nature, have a fellow-feeling of our infirmities; that we might receive the adoption of sons, and have comfort and access with boldness unto the throne of grace.

The Greatest Thing - By Mark Pendergrass (1977) -  All the Best Songs of Praise & Worship

The greatest thing in all my life is knowing You.  The greatest thing in all my life is knowing You.  I want to know You more; I want to know You more.  The greatest thing in all my life is knowing You.

The greatest thing in all my life is loving You.  The greatest thing in all my life is loving You.  I want to love You more; I want to love You more.  The greatest thing in all my life is loving You.

The greatest thing in all my life is serving You.  The greatest thing in all my life is serving You.  I want to know You more; I want to serve You more.  The greatest thing in all my life is serving You.

You Holy Angels Bright - By Richard Baxter (1672) based on Psalm 148 - Trinity Hymnal

1: You holy angels bright, who wait at God’s right hand, or through the realms of light fly at your Lord’s command, assist our song, for else the theme too high does seem for mortal tongue.

2: You blessed souls at rest, who ran this earthly race, and now, from sin released, behold the Savior’s face; God’s praises sound, as in His sight with sweet delight you do abound.

3: All nations of the earth, extol the world’s great King; with melody and mirth His glorious praises sing; for He still reigns, and will bring low the proudest foe that Him disdains.

4: Sing forth Jehovah’s praise, you saints, that on Him call!  Him magnify always, His holy churches all!  In Him rejoice, and there proclaim His holy name with sounding voice.

5: My soul, bear now your part, triumph in God above; with a well-tun-ed heart sing now the songs of love; you are His own, Whose precious blood shed for your good His love made known.

6: Away, distrustful care!  I have your promise, Lord; to banish all despair, I have Your oath and word; and therefore I shall see Your face and there Your grace shall magnify.

7: With Your triumphant flock then I shall numbered be; built on th’ eternal Rock, His glory we shall see.  The heav’ns so high with praise shall ring and all shall sing in harmony.

Q. 38. Why was it requisite that the mediator should be God?
A. It was requisite that the mediator should be God, that he might sustain and keep the human nature from sinking under the infinite wrath of God, and the power of death; give worth and efficacy to his sufferings, obedience, and intercession; and to satisfy God’s justice, procure his favor, purchase a peculiar people, give his Spirit to them, conquer all their enemies, and bring them to everlasting salvation.

Jesus Is Alive - By Ron Kenoly (1987) - All the Best Songs of Praise & Worship

Halelujah!  Jesus is alive, death has lost its vict’ry and the grave has been denied; Jesus lives forever, He’s alive, He’s alive!

He’s the Alpha and Omega, the first and last is He, the curse of sin is broken and we have perfect liberty; the Lamb of God has risen, He’s alive, He’s alive!

Halelujah, Jesus is alive!

Praise the Lord: Ye Heavens Adore Him - Stanzas 1&2 Anonymous, Stanza 3 by Edward Osler - Trinity Hymnal

1: Praise the Lord: ye heav’ns adore Him; praise Him, angels, in the height; sun and moon, rejoice before Him; praise Him all ye stars and light.  Praise the Lord, for He hath spoken; worlds His mighty voice obeyed; laws which never shall be broken for their guidance hath He made.

2: Praise the Lord, for He is glorious; never shall His promise fail: God hath made His saints victorious; sin and death shall not prevail.  Praise the God of our salvation; hosts on high, His pow’r proclaim; heav’n and earth and all creation, laud and magnify His name.

3: Worship, honor, glory, blessing, Lord, we offer unto thee; young and old, Thy praise expressing, in glad homage bend the knee.  All the saints in heav’n adore thee; we would bow before Thy throne: as Thine angels serve before Thee, so on earth Thy will be done.

Q. 37. How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?
A. Christ the Son of God became man, by taking to himself a true body, and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost in the womb of the virgin Mary, of her substance, and born of her, yet without sin.

New Skills

Just a quick note of thanks to Marq Toombs for showing me how to do some new stuff today for my blog .  Marq is much better at this stuff than I am, so I humbly bow to his superior technical skills.  I now semi-know how to create photos that I can use on my blog.  Take a look at my cool new blog header.  You’re all a little jealous aren’t you?  It’s ok, let it out.
